We’d been asking for the 2010 Nissan Maxima since October last year. For reasons unknown, our five requests were not taken seriously, while crappy magazines were getting to keep GT-Rs for months at a time. But finally someone took notice and let us have a Maxima for three measly days. I can’t say I was too enthusiastic about test-driving a rebodied Altima, but our readers had been clamouring for a real review of this car, and I’m now happy to oblige. General Maximus wouldn’t mind being seen in this Maxima. The car’s gluteus maximus especially makes it seem like the Maxima works out a maximum of 5 times a week, and possibly on weekends too. The upright front-end sports more muscles, bumper foglights and HID headlights “inspired” by the ones on the 370Z. Dual exhaust tips, 19-inch wheels and LED tails complete the premium look and feel of the car.

The unveiling of the Nissan Juke-R prototype has been as slow and painstaking as the car’s actual build. First we received initial details, a rendering and video of the project under way. Over the course of the following few weeks, Nissan continued keeping us on our toes with a series of videos showing the project coming together. Now that the vehicle has finally reached completion, the Japanese automaker has released a solitary image of the finished product.

Those unfamiliar ought to be impressed: Nissan took the drivetrain from its top-of-the-line GT-R – including its advanced all-wheel-drive system, twin-clutch transmission and 3.8-liter twin-turbo 480-horsepower V6 – and shoehorned it into one of its smallest vehicles, the Juke crossover. Of course, it wasn’t as simple as all that, as the Juke had to be completely gutted down to its frame and rebuilt from the ground up to accommodate an engine more than twice the size of what it was designed for. Nissan North America has announced the US price tags for the MY2011 Nissan Maxima. Already available at the brand’s dealers across the country, the successor of the iconic Datsun 810 represents one of the most exclusive four-door sports cars nowadays.
The new model year Maxima is available in two well-packed models – Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV, each of them boasting a standard 290 horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve VQ-series V6 powerplant linked with Xtronic CVT transmission.
Enhancements for MY2011 highlight a new rolled edge tailpipe finisher, smoked headlights (only on Sport models), a dark chrome grille (only on Sport models) as well as contrasting gray interior stitching (only on Sport models). The 2011 Nissan Maxima combines all the features of a luxury sedan with the performance and look of a sports car. It is offered in two trims: Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV, which are each equipped with a 290-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to an Xtronic CVT transmission with manual mode. The Maxima receives an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway and competes with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus.
Along with the two trim levels, there are several packages available (Sport, Premium, and Tech) for the 2011 Maxima that deliver impressive options and features. The Sport package features a sport-tuned suspension, rear spoiler, high intensity discharge xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors and heated seats. The Premium package adds a dual panel moonroof with rear roof window and front and rear power retractable sunshades. The 2011 Nissan Maxima features a wide, menacing grille and boomerang-shaped headlights that embody what Nissan refers to as “liquid motion.” The Altima sits on either 18- or 19-inch wheels and a power moonroof comes standard. Two different rear seat layouts are available, including a 60/40 fold-down rear seat with access to the trunk and a fixed rear seat with center armrest pass-through for carrying long items and equipment. The interior is Infiniti-esque with its leather appointed seating.
Braking is provided by standard four-wheel vented disc brakes with a four-channel, four-sensor, four-wheel anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. The 2011 Nissan Maxima also features standard vehicle dynamic control with a traction control system, as well as dual-stage front, side-curtain and side-impact airbags.

With subtle changes inside and out, the 2012 Nissan Maxima 3.5 S starts again at $32,510, while the 2012 Maxima 3.5 SV is priced again from $35,210. Both prices include a $760 shipping charge, and are unchanged from 2011.
For 2012, Nissan has modestly freshened the Maxima’s exterior, with a new grille, taillamps and alloy wheels in 18- and 19-inch diameters. Two new exterior colors, Java Metallic and Dark Slate, are available.
The cabin receives a few small trim changes, but is mostly carried over from 2011.
A new $710 Limited Edition package on the Maxima 3.5 S bundles smoked xenon headlights, a compass in the rearview mirror, 18-inch dark-silver-finish alloy wheels, rear spoiler, dark satin chrome grille, foglamps, outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and metallic trim.

The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission has approved the Nissan Altima and Chevrolet Impala, which join the Ford Transit Connect, on the list of vehicles approved as interim taxi cabs for the Big Apple. According to USA Today, New York cab companies are permitted to purchase those models for fleet duty until the Nissan NV200 “Taxi of Tomorrow” goes on sale. The NV200 beat out competitive designs from Ford and the Turkish Karsan V1 to earn the taxi commission’s nod, though the Nissan isn’t set to be available until 2013 at the earliest.
In the meantime, cab companies are going to need vehicles to replace their aging fleets of Ford Crown Victoria sedans. That’s where the new models come in. Once incorporated into cab company stables, they can remain until they retire, even past the 2013 arrival of the NV200. Once that date arrives, however, the Nissan Van will be the official vehicle of the New York taxi service.

For 2011, the Nissan Maxima sees only a handful of minor changes. Among them, the exhaust tips are different and the available Sport package gets smoked headlights, a dark chrome grille and gray stitching for the upholstery.
Introduction
The 2011 Nissan Maxima has a difficult task, as it’s meant to be a premium luxury sedan at the same time that it offers affordable family-sedan utility. It’s no wonder that this car is a good-news, not-much-bad-news proposition.
First the good news. This is a very nice car with powerful, refined performance, a well-trimmed cabin and plenty of high-tech luxury features. Sporting nearly 300 horsepower, the Maxima can show its taillights to pricier, entry-level luxury cars while its well-developed chassis offers a nice balance between sporty handling and a nice ride.
Within the cabin, you’ll find a well-designed interior with excellent materials. The optional, easily mastered navigation system is virtually identical to what you’ll find within various models offered by Nissan‘s upscale Infiniti division, and the iPod integration is one of the best ones out there. With pricing in the mid-$30,000 range for a fairly loaded example, the Maxima gets you a lot of car — in some cases, more than you’d get from luxury sedans costing thousands more.
The semi-bad news? You’re not going to get the prestige that some people want when they’re spending $30-40K on a car, even if it’s just a base model of a premium brand nameplate. Other choices you might want to consider include the Acura TSX and TL, Hyundai Genesis and Volkswagen CC, which are all in the Maxima’s price range. Like the Maxima, they have nice interiors and a good value proposition, yet they mostly lack the Maxima’s fun-to-drive nature. And of course you could also look at base versions of models like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G37 and Lexus IS. They deliver the performance and prestige expected, yet lack the Maxima’s long list of features.
